Columbia Valley, Washington
VINEYARD
The 2021 Poet’s Leap Riesling is sourced from old vine Riesling grown at Sagemoor’s Gamache Vineyard. Planted in the mid-1980s, this is a cooler site than other parts of the Columbia Valley. Riesling grown here is notable for its beautiful acidity and appealing citrus character. A small amount of Bacchus Vineyard and Yakima Valley’s DuBrul Vineyard Riesling round out the blend, adding minerality and an attractive stone fruit character to the finished wine.
Vintage Notes: The 2021 vintage will be remembered for its low yields and extreme temperatures stretching from late June to the beginning of July. The early heat wave was followed by ideal weather, with warm days and cool nights extending well into October. The combination of low yields and extra hang time allowed the grapes to reach full physiological maturity, resulting in a vintage marked by balanced wines with great concentration and flavor.
CELLAR
Handpicked grapes were gently sorted and whole cluster pressed to avoid imparting bitterness while enhancing the Riesling’s clean, crisp character. After pressing, the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a cool 60°F to preserve fresh fruit aromas and flavors, aged six months, and carefully blended to showcase the best lots of the vintage.
